As locals who have spent years discovering Lombok’s secrets, we’ve explored it all—waterfalls hidden deep within lush jungles, terraced rice fields glistening in the sun, epic hikes with views that make the climb worth every step, and serene islands that feel worlds away from the crowds. Lombok is a treasure trove of natural beauty and thrilling adventures that often go unnoticed.

So, when tasked with narrowing down the top 31 things to do in Lombok, we knew it wouldn’t be easy. Whether you’re here for the adrenaline, the scenery, or just the joy of exploring somewhere more unique than the overtrodden Bali, our list has something for every kind of explorer.

1. Join the Lombok Loop

We might be a bit biased, but our top recommendation for adventurous travelers looking for things to do on Lombok is to join our epic Lombok Loop trip!

This is our epic 4-day motorcycle journey around the island. Starting in Senggigi and Kuta Lombok, this tour takes you through coastal roads, lush hillsides, and even the volcanic terrain near Mount Rinjani.

2. Discover Lombok’s Waterfalls

Lombok is home to some of Indonesia’s most stunning waterfalls, many of which remain blissfully undiscovered compared to the busy cascades in Bali.

Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile near Senaru are two must-visit waterfalls in Lombok, accessible through beautiful jungle trails. A bit more secluded, Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu offer serene pools and lush surroundings perfect for a refreshing dip.

Aside from these popular options, there are hundreds more waterfalls in Lombok, from epic drops like Tiu Teja to blissful natural jungle swimming pools in Tetebatu.

3. Beach Hop in Senggigi

Senggigi’s coastline is dotted with pristine beaches, each offering something unique. While note as popular for surfing as Kuta and the southern coast, Senggigi’s laidback tropical charm makes it our favorite coastal area of the island.

We recommend spending a day hopping between Pantai Nipah, a secluded beach with calm waters perfect for swimming, and Malimbu Hill, an ideal spot to catch the sunset over the ocean.

Senggigi also has vibrant local markets and eateries for a well-rounded beach day.

While Senggigi was once the tourism capital of Lombok, we’ve watched the reigns slowly pass to Kuta Lombok over the years. But for us, that’s a good thing. Lombok’s west coast is one of the most picturesque, has solid tourism infrastructure and many amazing places to stay, but is still quiet, laid back, and far from a tourist trap!

4. Surf in Kuta Lombok

With world-renowned surf spots like Selong Belanak and Mawi Beach, Kuta Lombok is a surfing haven.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced surfer, you’ll find a wave to suit you, and the local surf schools offer affordable lessons. Kuta also has a laid-back vibe with cozy cafes and beachside restaurants, perfect for post-surf relaxation.

Kuta Lombok has soared in popularity in the last few years, and as a result there have been many awesome surf hostels and camps pop up all over the south coast!

5. Discover the Secret Gili Islands

Yes, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are popular. In fact, many more people visit these tiny islands off Lombok than visiting Lombok itself!

However, real travelers looking to get off the beaten path shouldn’t miss the Secret Gilis. These islands offer a more tranquil experience and in our opinion, is much nicer than the famous Gilis.

Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis, and Gili Sudak are some of the hidden gems you can explore for untouched beaches, crystal-clear waters, and incredible snorkeling with colorful coral reefs and marine life.

6. Explore The Even More Secret Gilis

Here’s a bonus one for this year’s update. We’ve been busy exploring the far reaches of our island and have found some awesome new spots we want to share with you!

The secret secret Gili Islands of Gili Goleng, Gile Gede, Gili Layar, Gili Rengit, and Gili Asahan are absolute hidden gems. We spent a few weeks exploring this islands, camping on some new tiny unnamed islands, and checking out the diving opportunities in this far remote region of Lombok.

If you’re up for a really unique place to visit in Lombok, check out the Gili Asahan Eco Lodge. This island is famous for horses on the beach, and somehow this remote eco lodge manages to sell some of the best pizza on the island!

7. Camp on Gili Kedis

For a true castaway experience, pitch a tent on Gili Kedis, a tiny, uninhabited island off Lombok’s southwest coast. This secluded spot is perfect for stargazing and waking up to the sound of waves on your own private island. 8. Climb Mount Rinjani

No visit to Lombok is complete without trekking Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. The two-day hike to the crater lake, Segara Anak, is challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering panoramic views of the surrounding islands.

This is one of the most adventurous things to do on Lombok, and in our opinion, a must for anyone who loves hiking and raw adventure. While it used to be a rite of passage for hikers in Lombok, this AMAZING volcano has quickly become a must-do for anyone traveling across South East Asia.

You can now climb directly to the summit or hike and camp on the Rinjani Crater, departing from Senaru or Sembalun. We are exploring options currently to develop our own trail via Tetebatu but this is proving more difficult than we thought! We’ll keep you posted!

9. Chill in Tetebatu

Escape the heat in Tetebatu, a tranquil village nestled in Lombok’s central highlands. Known for its lush rice paddies and cooler climate, it’s an excellent place to hike or take a local cooking class.

Don’t miss Tetebatu Monkey Forest, where you can spot black macaques in a natural jungle setting. Our favorite waterfall in Tetebatu is called Durian Indah, and on the Lombok Loop we’ll show you an awesome cliff jump spot (optional)!

10. Take the 4-Day Boat Trip to Komodo Islands

This multi-day boat journey from Lombok to Komodo is an unforgettable adventure through Indonesia’s most remote waters. You’ll stop at hidden islands, swim in crystal-clear lagoons, and hike Komodo National Park to see the legendary Komodo dragons up close.

11. Explore the Dirt Bike Trails of Lombok

Lombok’s terrain, from our dusty savannas to deep clay jungle is significantly rawer than Bali’s, making it a world-class enduro destination. For this, we exclusively recommend Mud N’ Gears.

What makes them special is the accessibility. You don’t need to be a pro; they offer specific “Beginner” packages that include a riding lesson before heading out. It is the best way to see the “wild” side of Lombok safely, supported by guides who actually race these trails on the weekends.

12. Find Lombok’s Pink Beach

Located on the southeastern coast, Tangsi Beach, or Pink Beach, gets its color from crushed red coral. It’s a quieter alternative to Bali’s beaches, with vibrant coral reefs that are perfect for snorkeling.

The scenic drive to reach it is half the adventure and one of the most adventurous things to do on Lombok, winding through rural villages and breathtaking landscapes. It’s a little hard to get to, but we recommend renting a bike and taking the trip if you are comfortable.

Otherwise, you can book a whole-day snorkeling boat trip that also visits Pentai Tangsi (Pink Beach).

13. Explore Sembalun & Senaru

These twin villages are the gateways to Mount Rinjani and offer diverse experiences. Sembalun is known for its strawberry farms and hillside trails, while Senaru boasts beautiful waterfalls (including Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile) and some beautiful cacao and coffee plantations.

Both villages offer a peaceful atmosphere and glimpses into Lombok’s traditional Sasak culture, and we recommend spending at least a couple of days there. In fact, our favorite hotel in Lombok (Rinjani Lodge) is located in Senaru!

14. Check Out Our Favorite Viewpoints

Lombok is full of amazing viewpoints and sunset lookouts. Our favorites are Bukit Pergasingan in Sembalun and Malimbu Hill near Senggigi. Both offer incredible views, with Bukit Pergasingan providing a unique perspective over terraced fields and the looming Rinjani volcano.

Other amazing viewpoints include Tanjung Aan in Kuta Lombok, Pusuk Forest Viewpoint (on the mountain road north of Senggigi), and Semeti Hills in South Lombok.

15. Visit Lombok Monkey Forest

There are two monkey forests in Lombok. The first is located near Tetebatu, this is becoming known as the “official” Lombok Monkey Forest and is home to friendly black monkeys that roam freely among dense jungle.

It’s a short hike to reach the forest, and you’ll be rewarded with cool, shaded trails and a chance to observe these creatures up close.

Another, lesser known monkey forest is located at the Pusuk Forest Viewpoint, just north of Senggigi inland. You’ll pass Bukit Bengkaung Lembah Sari on the way and at the peak, a troop of curious monkeys are waiting enjoying the view. Just keep your belongings secure—they’re curious by nature!

16. Traditional Weaving & Coconut Oil Workshop

Experience Lombok’s rich craftsmanship by joining a weaving workshop in Sukarara or learning to make coconut oil in a local village. These hands-on experiences allow you to support the local community while gaining insight into traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations.

We have partnered with local villages and families to provide fun workshops as part of our Lombok Loop, and you’ll get to take home some pure coconut oil as well!

17. Explore Ekas Peninsula

The Ekas Peninsula is an adventurer’s playground, with rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and some of Lombok’s best surf breaks. Whether you’re surfing at Ekas Bay, hiking to secluded viewpoints, or exploring the shoreline, this area offers a raw, untouched side of the island that few tourists venture to see.

If you’re comfortable, we recommend renting a motorbike and exploring the peninsula. There are also some great, chill, hidden gem surf schools in this area if you want to stay for a while and learn to surf.

18. Hike Pergasingan Hill

For a less intense alternative to Mount Rinjani, Pergasingan Hill offers a rewarding climb with stunning views over Sembalun’s patchwork fields. This is our second favorite hike in Lombok and an easier alternative with amazing views directly opposite Rinjani volcano!

The trek takes around two hours and is accessible for most fitness levels. It’s a popular spot for sunrise hikes and overnight camping (contact us to arrange).

19. Eat at a Local Warung

To taste authentic Lombok, dine at a warung—a local eatery serving traditional Indonesian dishes like ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and nasi campur (mixed rice).

Warung Nasi Bu Rati in Mataram is a popular spot, but you’ll find plenty of hidden gems throughout the island. Our favorite warung is Kedai Coffee Rachik Mamiq, ran by Henry– a very kind and caring man who makes a delicious and very unique coffee! In fact, this warung is the starting point for the Lombok Loop!

20. Explore Lombok’s Bat Caves

For a truly unique adventure, explore the bat caves near Kuta Lombok. There are quite a few, but our favorite is Bangkang Cave for its scenic stairway.

These dark caverns are filled with thousands of bats, creating an eerie but fascinating atmosphere. We recommend visiting earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to see the beautiful light rays penetrate through the cavern roofs.

21. Volunteer for Rasymadi Lombok Foundation

If you’re visiting Lombok and looking for an activity that gives back, the Rasymadi Lombok Foundation offers opportunities to support local communities through education and cultural exchange projects.

This foundation was started by the Lombok Loop cofounder Dayat. He has been working tirelessly to connect travelers with local communities to foster English education for young students, build classrooms, and create jobs for local people.

In fact, 10% of all profits from the Lombok Loop trips goes directly to funding this foundation. But you can also volunteer before or after your trip!

22. Stay in a Local Homestay

For an authentic Lombok travel experience, stay at a local homestay in one of the lesser-known villages across the island. These rural areas have very little access to tourism but thanks to the work of Dayat and his Lovin Lombok team, there are many villages that have built comfortable and authentic guest house accommodations across the islands.

You’ll get to know your hosts, learn about Sasak traditions, and enjoy home-cooked meals. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in Lombok’s culture while supporting local families! Contact us for more information 🙂

23. Attend a Cultural Festival

Lombok’s culture is louder and rawer than Bali’s, and nothing proves this better than its two biggest festivals. If your dates align, these are non-negotiable.

• Bau Nyale (The Sea Worm Festival): Usually in February or March, thousands of locals descend on Seger Beach (Kuta) at 3:00 AM to catch glowing sea worms (Nyale), believed to be the incarnation of a legendary princess. It is a massive, chaotic, all-night beach party that ends with everyone wading into the surf at dawn.
• Peresean (Stick Fighting): This is a combat ritual where two men fight with rattan sticks and buffalo-skin shields to the sound of frantic Gamelan music. It is a test of manhood and the hits are real. While you can see staged versions, the real tournaments happen during Bau Nyale or around Independence Day (August) and are incredibly electric.

Sasak Festivals Location: Bau Nyale (Seger Beach, Kuta). Peresean (Island-wide, often Kuta or village squares). Best For: Culture lovers and photographers. Cost: Free (Peresean crowds often donate).

Local Tip: Bau Nyale creates absolute gridlock in Kuta. If you go, park your scooter well away from the beach entrance and walk the last kilometer, or you will be stuck in a motorbike jam until sunrise.

24. Relax at the Rice Terraces

While Bali is famous for its rice terraces, Lombok’s Tetebatu Rice Terraces in our opinion are much more beautiful and offer a quieter experience. Ditch the crowds of Bali and wander through lush green paddies, meet friendly locals, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the countryside.

The terraces are especially picturesque during planting season, where you can watch locals plant and harvest rice.

We also recently explored the hills of Sawah Terasering Mareje in West Lombok and were blown away. Unlike Tetebatu, Mareje is barely known to tourists. It offers steep, dramatic terraces cut into the highlands near Lembar, with zero crowds and just the sound of the wind in the rice stalks.

25. Visit the Gili Islands

Chances are, you first heard of Lombok via the Gili Islands. Although most travelers think the Gili’s are part of Bali, they are actually located just off the northwest coast of Lombok!

The Gili Islands are becoming quite popular but are great since they offer something for every traveler, from the party scene on Gili Trawangan to the relaxed vibe of Gili Meno, or the honeymoon island of Gili Air.

Whether you’re interested in beachside yoga, diving, or simply soaking up the sun, the Gilis are a tropical paradise just a short boat ride from Lombok. You can take a local boat directly from Bangsal Port, departing multiple times a day.

26. Swim with Turtles

Looking for the best snorkeling activities in Lombok? Head to Gili Trawangan or Gili Air for the chance to swim with Green Turtles. For some reason, these islands are home to hundreds of turtles and you are almost guaranteed to spot one!

These gentle creatures are frequently spotted near the shore, making it easy for snorkelers to get an up-close look. Remember to respect their space and avoid touching them to protect their natural habitat.

27. Go Scuba Diving

Lombok’s underwater world is full of surprises, with dive sites like Shark Point and Meno Wall (Gili T) offering encounters with reef sharks, rays, and vibrant coral gardens.

Many dive shops in Kuta Lombok and the Gilis offer certification courses, making it easy for beginners to dive in. Our favorite is Trawangan Dive for their great prices and awesome pool bar, which is great for a cocktail or beer after a day of diving.

If you want to dive in Sekotong or the west peninsula, check out “Signature Scuba” on Gili Gede (we love to support local companies first, and their dive gear and guides are top notch)!

If you are an advanced diver, there are also some really epic dives on the south coast near Blongas (advanced divers only). The most famous of which is The Magnet but there’s a newly discovered site: The Cathedral with schooling hammers on the south too (minimum 100+ dives as the current is WILD!).

28. Visit a Traditional Village

If you want to understand the island’s roots, a stop at a traditional Sasak village is mandatory. The two main ones, Sade and Ende, function as “living museums.” While they are definitely set up for tourists, they offer a genuine look at how the indigenous Sasak people have lived for centuries.

You’ll walk among Bale Tani (thatched-roof houses) built with buffalo dung floors—which, surprisingly, don’t smell—and watch women weaving intricate Tenun textiles.

Sade is the larger, more famous option, but it can get very crowded. In our experience, Ende (just a few minutes away) feels slightly more authentic and less commercial. The local guides are excellent at explaining the unique family structures and traditions, including the “kidnapping” marriage rituals that still exist today.

Tip: A visit is usually donation based payment.

29. Go Find Some Epic Giant Swings!

Bali made the “Giant Swing” famous, but let’s be real: waiting in line for 45 minutes and paying $20 just to get the same photo as everyone else is not the vibe. In Lombok, we do it differently. Our island loves building swings in scenic spots, but here, there are no queues, no ticking timers, and usually, no entry fee.

Usually we just buy a coffee or a coconut and swing as long as we want.

Exploring the island to find these hidden gems is one of our favorite pastimes. While we keep our absolute favorite “secret swing” in the photo below for the Lombok Loop trip (sorry, we have to keep some secrets!), there are plenty of iconic spots you can track down yourself.

The Best Swing Spots:

• Gili Trawangan (Sunset Side): The classic. Ombak Sunset is the most famous (the “original” ocean swing), but The Exile nearby offers a cooler, more rastafarian vibe with hammocks and drums at sunset.
• Hotel Tugu (Sire Beach): If you want a classy, empty beach experience, the swing here is stunning. It’s quiet, elegant, and perfect for a sunrise shot without a soul in sight.
• Sembalun (Bukit Selong): Trade the ocean for the clouds. Swings here overlook a patchwork quilt of multi-colored rice fields and the looming Rinjani volcano. It is a completely different aesthetic.
• Tanjung Aan: Several warungs along this legendary bay have built swings right in the shallow turquoise water. It’s the ultimate “tropical paradise” shot.

30. Get Off the Beaten Path

For those seeking true adventure, venture beyond the usual spots and explore Lombok’s untouched corners.

While most guides on things to do around the world will say this, we can truly be honest when we say Lombok is the BEST place in the world to just explore. 30 things to do is just too short, and some of the best things you’ll find on our island are completely off the beaten path!

31. Spot the Ebony Leaf Monkey (Black Monkey)

If you find yourself in Tetebatu then a quick stroll to the nearby Tetebatu Monkey forest is a must!

This small family of 20-30 monkeys can be found in the forest nearby Tetebatu Waterfall. The enterence fee is 30,000 IDR per person and a guide is necessary.

The best time to see the monkeys is between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM as they’re more active before the heat of the day sets in. It’s an awesome experience for those who enjoy wildlife and photography.

Tip: The monkeys can be shy so it is best to keep quiet whilst walking along the trails.
