Gili Goleng: The “Secret Gili” You’ve Never Heard Of
If you’ve spent any time in the north of Lombok, you know the Gili islands are famous, but they’ve also become a bit overcrowded. We prefer the “Secret Gilis” of the Southwest, and Gili Goleng is an even better kept secret! It’s a tiny island filled with coconut trees, white sand and the odd cactus.
The only traffic you’ll encounter is a small family of monkeys. We don’t stop by this area on the Lombok Loop (it’s a bit of a detour from our main route) however it is a must visit if you’re visiting the Sekotong area.
Gili Goleng Overview

- Parking: Secure moped parking is available at Pantai Kores for 10,000 IDR.
- Boat Transfer: Expect to pay 25,000K to 50,000K IDR for a local outrigger (perahu) return trip from the mainland. (Negotiate this before you step on the boat).
- Moped Friendly: The mainland roads to Pantai Kores are tar and easy for mopeds.
- Best Time to Visit: 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM for the calmest water and best snorkeling visibility.

4 Things to Do on Gili Goleng
Although Gili Goleng is tiny, it offers a level of raw exploration that you simply won’t find on the more developed islands nearby. Whether you are looking for a relaxing few hours on the beach or wanting to camp, this is Lombok at its most authentic.
1. The “Seahorse” Snorkel Spot
The East side of the island is where you’ll want to snorkel. You’ll spot vibrant coral gardens along the North and some seagrass beds on the East. This is prime habitat for seahorses and sea turtles. Move slowly here as the seahorses are masters of camouflage and cling to the grass blades making it very hard to spot.

2. Walk The Island Loop
At low tide, Gili Goleng reveals a pristine white sand path that allows you to walk the entire circumference of the island. It’s a peaceful 20-minute stroll, but timing is everything. If the tide starts coming in, the sand path disappears quickly. You will be forced to “rock scramble” over sharp volcanic rocks on the western and northern edge to get back to the sand area.
Tip: Wear reef shoes or sturdy sandals if you plan to do the full loop.

3. Kayaking from Gili Asahan
If you are staying on neighboring Gili Asahan, Gili Goleng is the perfect kayaking destination. The water between the two islands is incredibly calm and protected from the swell however there are some currents depending on the tide and time. Nothing to be concerned about though.
It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to paddle across. Kayaks can be rented from Gili Asahan Eco Lodge.

4. Wild Camping
For those who find Gili Asahan too “luxurious,” or you’re looking for somewhere to hide from the crowds Gili Goleng offers a true place to experience wild camping. There are no designated campsites, but the flat grass areas near the treeline are perfect for a tent.
Local Tip: You must bring all water and food you need as there is no shops, food, water or facilities on the island. Also, negotiate a specific pickup time with your boat captain for the following morning so you don’t find yourself stranded. Also please take all of your rubbish away when you leave.

Tip: Mosquitos can be vicious in the long grass so be sure to pack some repellent.
