If you are looking for that raw, untouched island vibe that Bali left behind decades ago, the “Secret Gilis” of Southwest Lombok are your final frontier. Among them, Gili Layar stands out for its diving and snorkeling along with its sunset views.

Gili Layar is essentially a giant, natural aquarium measuring 3km round. Whether you are staying on neighboring Gili Gede or taking a day trip from Gili Asahan, this is where you go when you want to feel like you’ve actually left civilization behind.

We don’t visit Gili Layar on the Lombok Loop but if you’re looking for a side quest during your time on Lombok we recommend spending a few hours exploring underwater here.

Gili Layar Overview

The moment you step off the boat onto Gili Layar, you will realize just how off grid you are. There are no paved paths, zero ATMs, and the island is entirely car free, so you need to bring enough cash for your boat, food, and any gear rentals before you leave the mainland.

Parking: Secure moped parking is available at Tembowong Harbour for 10,000 IDR.
Boat Transfer: Expect to pay around 250,000 IDR to 350,000 IDR for a private local outrigger (perahu) return trip from Tembowong Harbour.
Moped Friendly: The mainland drive down to Tembowong Harbour is fully sealed just watch out for stray dogs crossing the road. Once on Gili Layar, you are on foot.
Best Time to Visit: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on a weekday as weekends see more crowds
Facilities: Extremely limited as the resort is now closed.

Getting to Gili Layar

Most travelers launch from Tembowong Harbour, the primary gateway to the Southwest Gilis. The boat ride across the channel is short and scenic. Depending on your base in Lombok, expect these travel times:

Kuta Lombok to Tembowong Harbour: 2 hours
Senggigi to Tembowong Harbour: 1 hour 45 mins
Mataram to Tembowong Harbour: 1 hour 15 mins
Gili Asahan or Gili Gede to Gili Layar: 15 mins by small boat

Local Tip: Negotiate your return pickup time with your boat captain before they leave you on the beach, as cell service can be spotty.

4 Things to Do on Gili Layar

Let’s be real! You do not take a boat to the Secret Gili Islands for a packed itinerary. Gili Layar is all about relaxing. With zero roads and barely any infrastructure, your options here are limited to the reef, the sand, and the sun. Here is how we suggest spending your time.

Best time to visit: May – October we find this the best time for ocean adventures as the rain has stopped and the water is clear.

The Shore Snorkel

Gili Layar is famous among the local diving community for its macro life. The reef in front of the restaurant is home to an incredible variety of hard and soft corals. It is a known hotspot for Nudibranchs (colorful sea slugs) and sea turtles.

Scuba diving is also available and this gives you and even better view or the Nudibranchs and is great for underwater photographers. We recommend Signature Scuba Dive because their local divemasters know exactly which areas to find the best corals.

Note: High tide is the best time to snorkel on the house reef as low tide can be shallow and seem somewhat impossible to return to shore without destroying corals.

Leave No Trace: We always keep it real….the trash issue in Indonesia is heartbreaking, particularly during the wet season when offshore currents push debris onto the Gili islands. Because Gili Layar lacks any real infrastructure, leaving your trash on the island just means it will likely end up burned or blown back into the ocean. Do the reef a favor and pack your rubbish back to the mainland.

North Point Sunset

Because of how the island sits in the archipelago, the northern tip is the absolute best spot to catch the sunset. Since there are no roads, you will need to walk along the rocky shoreline to get there and it is best to bring a torch for the walk back.

Note: Mosquitoes can be absolutely brutal on this island, especially during the wet season around January. Pack serious repellent.

Refuel at Gili Layar Warung

As one of the only established spots on the island, Gili Layar Warung is the social hub of Gili Layar. It is a low key place to grab a cold Bintang, eat some local Indonesian food, and take a break from the sun.

Importantly, it is the only place to find a reliable toilet on this side of the island as the resort is currently not open.

Island Hopping to Asahan, Goleng and Gede

Gili Layar is perfectly positioned for a multi island day trip. Once you finish snorkeling, it is a very short boat ride to Gili Asahan, known for its eco lodges and pristine white sand or Gili Goleng to try and spot the illusive seahorse or local sea turtle.

Alternatively, you can head over to Gili Gede, the largest island in the area, to explore local fishing villages and resorts like Kokomo.
