Lombok vs Gili Islands: Which Should You Visit in 2026?

The Gili Islands are part of Lombok. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air sit off Lombok’s northwest coast, belong to the North Lombok regency, and the public boat from Bangsal Harbour gets you there in 10 to 20 minutes on the water.

You’re choosing between three small car-free islands built around the beach and the big island they belong to, with a 3,726 m volcano, a surf coast and a lot of countryside in between. We live on Lombok and run the Lombok Loop out of Senggigi and Kuta, so it’s a question we get asked a lot. Our answer is usually both, in a particular order.

Lombok or the Gilis: Which One Suits You?

With only a few days, you’ll probably have to pick one.

Pick the Gilis if

• You want your whole trip within walking distance of the water.
• You want to snorkel with turtles straight off the beach, no boat needed.
• You’re after nightlife (Gili Trawangan) or total quiet (Gili Meno).
• You don’t want to ride a scooter or organise drivers.
• You’ve got four days or less and you’re coming across from Bali.

Pick Lombok if

• You want to climb Rinjani, swim under jungle waterfalls or learn to surf.
• You’d rather have a beach to yourself than a row of beach bars.
• You want to see Sasak village life, markets and ceremonies.
• You’re happy on a scooter, or you’ll take a driver or a guided trip.
• You’re flying straight into Lombok International Airport.

Do both if you’ve got a week or more. Three nights on the Gilis and the rest on Lombok is the split we suggest most often, and there’s a day-by-day breakdown further down.

We think of the Gilis as the easy trip and Lombok as the big one. Neither is better. They suit different days of the same holiday, and plenty of people do both.

What Lombok and the Gilis Cost in 2026

Rooms and meals cost more on the Gilis. Lombok is cheaper day to day, but you’ll pay to get around it, because almost nothing worth seeing is walkable. We’d budget for a scooter or a driver every day you’re on Lombok.

Note: Every foreign visitor pays a harbour tax of 10,000 to 20,000 IDR when they step off the boat on the Gilis. It’s legitimate, it’s separate from your boat ticket, and it catches out almost everyone. North Lombok’s council has proposed raising the foreign visitor rate to 50,000 IDR, so check the current figure on arrival. Bali’s 150,000 IDR tourist levy doesn’t apply on Lombok or the Gilis.

Getting Between Bali, Lombok and the Gilis

From Bali

Fast boats run direct from Bali to all three Gilis, and most boats heading for Lombok stop at the Gilis first. From Padang Bai the crossing to Gili Trawangan takes about 1.5 hours, and one-way fares mostly sit between 400,000 and 850,000 IDR depending on the operator and where you book. From Serangan it’s closer to 3.5 hours.

For Lombok itself, you’ve got three options. The fast boat lands at Bangsal or Senggigi Pier, the public ferry runs from Padang Bai to Lembar in four to six hours, and the flight from Denpasar is 50 minutes in the air. Lombok International Airport also has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which makes skipping Bali a real option.

From Lombok to the Gilis

Every public boat to the Gilis leaves from Bangsal Harbour, 30 minutes north of Senggigi. The public boat costs 20,000 IDR to Gili Air, 21,000 IDR to Gili Meno and 23,000 IDR to Gili Trawangan, and it leaves when it’s full, which is around 35 to 40 people. The ticket office runs roughly 7am to 5pm, but we wouldn’t count on anything after mid afternoon.

Don’t want to wait for a boat to fill? The Karya Bahari cooperative runs a speedboat on the same routes for about 100,000 IDR on an hourly timetable. Private charters leave from Teluk Nare, a few minutes down the road, and they’re quieter and far less hassle.

Local Tip: Bangsal has one well-known con. Someone friendly tells you the public boat is full or finished for the day, then offers you a private boat for several hundred thousand rupiah. Walk past them to the official ticket office on the left of the harbour by the jetty. Our Bangsal Harbour guide has the full routine.

Between the Gilis

Island-hopping boats connect Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan through the day, so you can base yourself on one island and visit the others. The hop between islands takes 5 to 15 minutes. For a single day trip, we’d pick Gili Meno for the underwater statues and the turtles.

From the Gilis Back to Lombok

From Bangsal it’s 30 minutes to Senggigi, around two hours to the airport, and two to three hours to Kuta Lombok, depending on traffic. A driver to Kuta costs roughly 600,000 to 800,000 IDR. Agree the price before you get in the car.

That drive is why we tell people coming off the Gilis to spend their first Lombok night in Senggigi instead of Kuta. The Lombok Loop leaves Senggigi every Thursday morning, half an hour from the harbour, and finishes back there on Sunday.

The Three Gilis Aren’t the Same

Choosing the right Gili makes more difference than choosing Gilis over Lombok. Pick the wrong one and you’ll either be kept awake until 3am or bored by 8pm.

Gili Trawangan

Gili T is the biggest, busiest and loudest of the three. It’s got the most restaurants, dive shops and places to stay, and bars that run late most nights. The west side is where you go for sunset and the beach swings.

We’d pick it for a first Gili trip if you’re social and under 30. Light sleepers should stay away from the main strip on the east coast.

Gili Air

Gili Air is the middle ground and the closest to Lombok, about 10 minutes on the water from Bangsal. There are plenty of cafes, good snorkelling off the east coast and a few bars, but the nights finish earlier.

This is where we’d send couples and anyone who wants a social life without the party.

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest, with almost no nightlife and the emptiest beaches of the three. It’s also where you’ll find Turtle Point and the Nest, a ring of 48 life-size statues about 4 m under the surface off the west coast.

If you want to read, snorkel and go to bed early, Meno’s the one. Get restless after two days? Visit on a day trip from Gili Air instead.

Where Lombok Beats the Gilis

Mount Rinjani

Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, fills the north of Lombok. Nothing on the Gilis comes close, and most people take three days to the crater rim and summit from Senaru or Sembalun.

• Park fee – 250,000 IDR per day for foreign trekkers on the main routes
• Season – Open 1 April to 31 December, closed 1 January to 31 March every year
• Rules – A licensed guide is compulsory, with a maximum of four guests per guide, and there’s a health check at the start

Waterfalls and the Highlands

Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile near Senaru are the two we’d put first, with a jungle walk and a swim at the bottom. Entry is 20,000 IDR, parking 10,000 IDR and a guide around 150,000 IDR per group. In the central highlands, Tetebatu has rice terraces, cooler air and Lombok’s black monkeys in the monkey forest nearby. It’s about 90 minutes north of Kuta, and our Tetebatu Monkey Forest guide explains how to see them.

The South Coast Beaches and Surf

Nine white sand beaches sit within 45 minutes of Kuta Lombok, and they’re far quieter than anything comparable in Bali. Most charge 10,000 IDR to park a scooter.

• Tanjung Aan – Two crescents of pale sand and calm water on the eastern side, 12 minutes from Kuta
• Mawun – A deep horseshoe bay that stays calm when the rest of the coast is rough, 15 minutes west
• Selong Belanak – Where nearly everyone on Lombok learns to surf, 30 minutes west
• Mawi – For intermediate surfers, with a rough dirt track in, 45 minutes west

Lombok’s Other Gilis

Off Lombok’s southwest coast near Sekotong, the Secret Gilis (Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis, Gili Sudak and Gili Tangkong) have the healthiest coral we know of around the island, and almost nobody on them. Sekotong is about 1.5 hours from Kuta or Senggigi, and the local boats between the islands take 15 to 20 minutes.

Sasak Culture

Lombok is home to the Sasak people, and it’s where you’ll see village life, weekly markets and ceremonies that are hard to find on the Gilis. Sade and Ende near Kuta show traditional Sasak houses, Sukarara is the weaving village, and Pura Lingsar near Mataram is a temple complex shared by Hindu and Muslim communities.

Every February the south coast hosts the Bau Nyale festival, when thousands of people gather on the beaches before dawn to catch sea worms. Kuta fills up for it, so book ahead if your dates overlap. If you’re based in Kuta, we’d make time for at least one village visit.

Where the Gilis Beat Lombok

Snorkelling Straight Off the Beach

You can walk out from your room on Gili Air or Gili Meno and be over coral with turtles within minutes. On Lombok, the best reefs, at Pink Beach and the Secret Gilis, almost always need a boat. Of everything the Gilis do better, this is the one we’d rate highest.

Learning to Dive

All three islands have dive centres with calm, shallow training sites and plenty of competition on price. It’s one of the most popular places in Indonesia to do an open water course, and it’s where we’d learn.

No Traffic

With no cars or motorbikes, you can let kids walk around, cycle a loop of 5 to 7 km and never hear a horn. After a few days on Lombok’s roads, it’s a very different pace.

Nightlife

Gili T is the only place around here with a night out most nights of the week. Kuta and Senggigi have a few bars open past 11pm, and that’s about it.

The Downsides of Each

On the Gilis

• Water supply – Gili Trawangan’s piped water stopped for about a week in early September 2026, over an unresolved permit for the island’s desalination plant. Around 300 visitors left early and a few hotels closed. It came back on 10 September, but the permit problem hasn’t been fixed, and salty showers have been common on Gili T and Gili Meno since 2024. We’d ask your accommodation how it gets its water before you book.
• E-bikes – A February 2026 order banned electric bike rentals on all three islands. You’ll still see plenty, and they’ve made Gili T’s main paths far less relaxing than they used to be.
• Cidomos – Horse welfare has improved thanks to local groups like the Gili Eco Trust, but overloading and poor harnesses still happen. We’d walk or cycle.
• Crowds – In July and August, Gili T’s main strip is shoulder to shoulder.
• Cash – There are ATMs on all three islands, and they can run dry in high season. Bring cash from Lombok or Bali.

On Lombok

• Distances – The south coast to the northern waterfalls is a full day’s ride, and you need wheels for almost everything.
• Wet season roads – The main roads are sealed, but side tracks to beaches like Mawi turn bad after heavy rain between November and March.
• Medical care – Kuta has clinics for small things. Anything serious means Mataram, two hours away.
• Alcohol – Lombok is mostly Muslim. You’ll find beer in Kuta, Senggigi and hotels, but not on every menu.
• Quiet nights – Outside Kuta and Senggigi, most places are asleep by 10pm.

When to Visit Lombok and the Gilis

The dry season from May to October is the best time for both. July and August are the peak, when Gili prices jump and boats fill up. If you asked us to pick, we’d say May, June, September or October, when the water’s clear and the Gilis aren’t full.

The wet season runs roughly November to March. It rarely rains all day; you’ll usually get an hour or two of heavy rain in the afternoon. The Gilis cope with that better than Lombok’s dirt roads do.

• Rinjani closes every year from 1 January to 31 March.
• MotoGP at Mandalika runs 9 to 11 October 2026, just outside Kuta. Every room in the south books out and rates triple.
• Bau Nyale fills Kuta for one night each February.

How to Split Your Time Between Lombok and the Gilis

Coming from Bali by fast boat, do the Gilis first, since most boats stop there anyway, then cross to Lombok. After that, finish wherever your flight home leaves from. Heading home through Bali? The morning fast boat from Bangsal or Senggigi is easy, but with an international flight out of Denpasar the same day, we’d fly across from Lombok instead.

With a few days and beaches in mind, go to the Gilis. For a trip that feels like an adventure, go to Lombok. With a week or more, do both and give Lombok the bigger share, because the island takes longer to see and it’s where most of the memorable days happen.
