Is Lombok Safe? A Local’s Honest Guide for 2026

Lombok is safe for visitors. The things that put travellers in hospital here are scooter crashes and rip currents, and crime against tourists is rare.

We live on Lombok and ride the island every week on the Lombok Loop, so this guide is what we tell people before they set off. It covers the risks in the order we’d rank them, what’s changed in 2025 and 2026, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Is Lombok Safe Right Now? (September 2026)

Yes. None of the big English-speaking governments advises against travel to Lombok, and nothing in 2026 has changed our advice to the people we guide.

• UK FCDO – No advice against travel to Lombok. The only no-go zones in Indonesia are exclusion areas around a handful of erupting volcanoes, none of them on Lombok.
• US State Department – Level 2, exercise increased caution, for Indonesia as a whole. Lombok isn’t named.
• Australia Smartraveller – Exercise a high degree of caution across Indonesia, with Lombok named for rip current drownings, motorbike deaths and drink poisoning.
• New Zealand SafeTravel – Exercise increased caution.

What’s Happened in 2025 and 2026

• 15 August 2026 – A magnitude 7.7 earthquake off Flores was felt strongly on Lombok. A tsunami warning went out and was lifted the same morning.
• 3 to 10 September 2026 – Gili Trawangan’s piped water supply stopped for about a week over a permit dispute. It’s back on.
• Protests – In August 2025 protesters burned the provincial parliament building in Mataram during national unrest, and in June 2026 students scuffled with police at the governor’s office. Both were at government buildings in the city, away from the beaches. Steer clear of any demonstration you come across.
• Mount Rinjani – The volcano sits at alert Level II, the second of four levels. Trekking runs normally from April to December.

Scooters and the sea top our list. Crime sits well below them, and we’d put more effort into the first two than into anything else on this page.

Road Safety: The Biggest Risk You’ll Take

Scooter road rash is the injury we deal with most, and it’s almost always avoidable. Our scooter rental guide has the checks we run on a bike before riding it, plus the licence and insurance situation. Roads on Lombok are better than they were five years ago, but you’ll share them with trucks, dogs, livestock and kids on bikes, and the side roads to beaches can be sand, gravel or mud.

Get the Right Licence

A home licence on its own isn’t valid in Indonesia. You need an International Driving Permit covering motorcycles, and Smartraveller warns that insurers deny claims from riders without the proper licence. An uninsured crash costs far more than any police fine.

Police run checkpoints across the island, especially during Operasi Zebra traffic operations. The November 2025 operation set up checkpoints on the Senggigi coast road, between Malimbu and Bangsal, on the Pusuk pass, around Mandalika and in Mataram. The maximum fine is 1,000,000 IDR for riding without a licence and 250,000 IDR without a helmet.

How We Ride

• Wear a helmet every time – Including the five minutes to the shop.
• Don’t ride after dark on roads you don’t know – Potholes, unlit trucks and dogs are all harder to see.
• Don’t drink and ride – Take a Grab or walk home instead.
• Ride slower than the locals – They know where the potholes are. You don’t.
• Skip the dirt tracks after heavy rain – We won’t send an inexperienced rider down the access road to Mawi after a downpour.

Local Tip: Dogs in Kuta get territorial after dark on the quiet roads between town and the beaches. Keep riding steady, don’t stop and don’t speed up. They almost always lose interest.

Beaches, Rip Currents and Boats

Swimming and Rip Currents

Lombok’s surf beaches face the Indian Ocean and have rips strong enough to take a confident swimmer out. Don’t expect lifeguards. On 19 August 2026 a British man drowned in a rip at Kerandangan near Senggigi, and on 2 August four local visitors were swept off the rocks at Semeti near Selong Belanak while taking photos.

For swimming, we’d send you to the calm bays: Mawun, which sits inside a deep horseshoe, the eastern side of Tanjung Aan, and the inside of Selong Belanak. Treat Mawi and the open surf beaches as surfing spots, not swimming spots.

• Swim at a beach with other people on it – If you get into trouble, someone sees.
• If a rip takes you, swim parallel to the beach – Don’t fight it towards the sand.
• Stay off wet rocks in big swell – Waves on this coast come in sets, and a big one can arrive after several calm minutes.

Fast Boats

Most fast boats between Bali, the Gilis and Lombok run without trouble, but boats do break down and sink in this strait. In March 2026 the Putri Island 02 cracked its hull off Amed on the way from Gili Trawangan to Padang Bai, and all 117 people on board were rescued.

We use Eka Jaya, which runs aluminium-hulled boats, and we’d avoid anything that looks overloaded or leaves in weather the other boats are skipping. Crossings get cancelled in the wet season, so don’t book a boat on the same day as an international flight. Every route and operator is in our guide to getting from Bali to Lombok.

Crime and Scams

Violent crime against tourists on Lombok is rare, and there’s no official breakdown of crime against visitors. What does happen is opportunistic theft and overcharging.

Theft

In February 2026 a tourist lost a bag to a motorbike snatch theft in Kuta, and police stepped up patrols around Mandalika afterwards. That’s the pattern to guard against. Carry your bag on the side away from the road, don’t leave phones in the scooter basket, and don’t leave anything on the sand while you swim.

Polda NTB, the provincial police, added tourism patrols at the Gili harbours, Senggigi and North Lombok in May 2026.

Scams

• The Bangsal boat con – Someone tells you the public boat to the Gilis is full or finished, then sells you a private boat at ten times the price. The public boat costs 20,000 to 23,000 IDR. Our Bangsal Harbour guide shows you where the real ticket office is.
• Scooter damage claims – Photograph every scratch on a rental before you ride off, with the owner in the shot.
• Taxi pricing – Agree the fare before you get in, every time.
• ATMs – Use machines inside banks or minimarts, and draw cash on weekdays. Machines in Kuta run dry on weekends and holidays.

Is Kuta Lombok Safe?

Yes, and it’s where most visitors stay. The problems we see in Kuta are scooter crashes, bags left on beaches, the odd snatch theft and dogs on the back roads at night. It’s also busy and expensive during MotoGP week, which runs 9 to 11 October 2026.

Kuta has clinics for small things. Anything serious means the hospitals in Mataram, about two hours away, or RS Mandalika at Sengkol, north of Kuta. There’s more on the town in our Kuta Lombok guide.

Can You Drink Alcohol in Lombok?

Yes, in the tourist areas. Lombok is mostly Muslim, and the Sasak make up roughly 85% of the population, so alcohol plays a much smaller part in everyday life than in Bali. You’ll find beer in Kuta, Senggigi, hotels and all three Gilis, and a large beer in Kuta costs 35,000 to 60,000 IDR.

Outside those areas it’s a different island. In villages like Sembalun and Senaru there are no bars, and drinking in public is disrespectful. We don’t drink in the villages, and we’d ask you not to either.

Ramadan in 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March. Tourist areas keep serving, but don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during the day outside them.

Methanol and Drink Spiking

Methanol poisoning from bootleg spirits has killed travellers in Indonesia, including on Gili Trawangan in 2022, and the UK government warns it’s happened in licensed bars. The FCDO also reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands.

• Stick to beer, wine and sealed bottles from known brands – Bintang comes out of a factory.
• Skip cheap cocktails and arak – The local palm spirit is where methanol turns up.
• Watch your drink – Don’t accept drinks from strangers, and don’t leave a glass on the bar.
• Know the symptoms – Blurred vision, confusion and severe headache after drinking need a hospital straight away.

Laws That Catch Visitors Out

The New Criminal Code

Indonesia’s new criminal code came into force on 2 January 2026. It includes penalties for sex outside marriage and for unmarried couples living together, but a case can only start with a complaint from a spouse, parent or child. The government says that requirement stops it being used against tourists.

Drugs

Indonesia’s drug laws are among the harshest in the world, with long prison sentences and the death penalty for trafficking. That includes the magic mushroom shakes you’ll see advertised on Gili Trawangan. Mushrooms are a Group I narcotic, police arrested five people with 2.2 kg on Gili T in 2024, and in April 2026 the Supreme Court reduced one Gili mushroom sentence to three years. We’d walk past the sign.

LGBTQ+ Travellers

Same-sex relationships aren’t illegal nationally, but the complaint-based rules in the new code apply to everyone, and a 2025 government regulation has raised concern among LGBTQ+ Indonesians. We’d keep public affection low-key, especially outside Kuta, Senggigi and the Gilis.

Earthquakes, Rinjani and the Weather

Earthquakes

Lombok sits on an active fault line. In July and August 2018 a series of earthquakes, including a magnitude 6.9 on 5 August, killed 564 people and damaged more than 137,000 homes, mostly in the north. The island has rebuilt since.

• Install the Info BMKG app – It pushes earthquake and tsunami alerts, which Indonesia’s warning system now issues within three minutes.
• If you feel strong shaking on the coast – Move inland or uphill straight away. Don’t wait for a siren.
• Indoors – Drop, cover and hold on until it stops.

Mount Rinjani

Rinjani is safe to trek with a licensed guide, in season, and in decent weather. It’s also a serious mountain. Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins died after a fall near the summit in June 2025, and there have been more deaths since, including on the Torean route in 2026.

The park tightened its rules after 2025. You book through the official system, carry health papers and insurance, go with a certified guide, and get a briefing and gear check before you start. The mountain closes every year from 1 January to 31 March. Everything else is in our Mount Rinjani trek guide.

Note: Barujari, the active cone inside the crater lake, sits at alert Level II. The park keeps an exclusion zone around it, and treks stay outside it.

Floods and the Wet Season

The wet season runs roughly November to March. Most days you’ll get an hour or two of heavy rain in the afternoon, but it can flood. In July 2025 Mataram had its worst flood in at least 40 years. Health and Hospitals

• Water – Don’t drink the tap water. We refill bottles at the water stations most guesthouses and cafes keep.
• Dengue – West Nusa Tenggara recorded 3,643 cases in 2025 and there’s no spike in 2026, but it’s present all year. Use repellent at dawn and dusk.
• Rabies – Lombok island is still free of confirmed rabies, but neighbouring Sumbawa has active cases. Don’t pat stray dogs or feed monkeys, and get any bite cleaned and seen at a clinic the same day.
• Hospitals – RSUD Provinsi NTB and Siloam Hospital in Mataram handle serious cases. RS Mandalika near the airport is the closest to Kuta.
• Insurance – Evacuation from Indonesia can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Make sure your policy covers motorbike riding. Our riders often mention HeyMondo.

Where to Stay in Lombok for Safety

Every area visitors normally stay in is safe, and we’d pick based on the trip you want.

• Senggigi – Quiet, easy to walk around, 30 minutes from the Gili boats. The best base if you don’t want to ride much.
• Kuta – The busiest tourist town, with the most bars and the most scooter traffic. Safe, but it’s where the theft and dog stories come from.
• The Gili Islands – No cars, so no road risk, but the most alcohol and the most drink-related incidents. Gili Air and Gili Meno are calmer than Gili T.
• Tetebatu – Rice terraces and village homestays. Very quiet and conservative, so dress modestly.
• Senaru and Sembalun – The Rinjani trailheads. Quiet and conservative, with no bars or nightlife.

Is Lombok Safe for Solo and Female Travellers?

We think Lombok is one of the easier places in Indonesia to travel solo. People are curious and friendly, the hostels in Kuta and on the Gilis are social, and joining a group for a few days takes care of the loneliest part of solo travel.

The UK government notes that reported rape and sexual assault cases are high in Bali and Lombok, and links many of them to drink spiking, so the drink rules above apply double. Stay with people you know on nights out, get a Grab or a hotel driver home, and trust your instincts about homestays and guides.

Local Customs That Keep You Out of Trouble

• Dress for the place – Swimwear is fine on the beach and in Kuta. In villages, markets and mosques, cover your shoulders and knees.
• Use your right hand – For giving, receiving, eating and paying.
• Ask before photographing people – Most say yes.
• Keep it quiet at prayer time – You’ll hear the call to prayer five times a day. Turn the music down near mosques.
• Greet people – A smile and “selamat pagi” in the morning goes a long way in the villages.
