Located on Lombok’s northwest coast, this small but bustling harbor is the main departure point for public and private boats to Bali and the Gilis—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

Hundreds of travelers pass through daily and there are dozens of boat companies operating. Here’s the basics of what you need to know:

• Location: Situated on Lombok’s northwest coast, approximately 30 minutes North from Senggigi and 2 hours from Kuta Lombok.
• Recommendation: Stay in Senggigi the night before departure or after arrival to ease your travel plans—this is also the starting point for our Lombok Loop.
• Facilities: Basic amenities like parking (expect fees), ticket counters (indoor), basic food stalls, and toilets are available.
• Boat Options: Offers public boats, fast boats, and private charters to Bali, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air, with varying schedules and costs.
• Boat Tickets: Purchase tickets at the transit desk upon arrival, or book in advance with Eka Jaya Fast Boat for Bali routes or GetYourGuide for affordable transfers to the Gili Islands.

Buying Boat Tickets at Bangsal Harbor

If you’re departing from Lombok, you can purchase boat tickets at the bustling transit desk when you arrive at Bangsal Harbor. However, we typically recommend booking your tickets in advance to avoid long waits and ensure a hassle-free experience.

• For trips between Lombok and Bali, we recommend Eka Jaya, known for reliable service and comfortable boats.
• For affordable and fast transfers between Lombok and the Gili Islands, GetYourGuide is our go-to for booking cheap and fast boat tickets online. We usually go for the “Putra Zavier” boats.

If you book your boat ticket online, simply show the e-ticket on your phone at the harbor. You’ll receive a printed ticket and a tag for your bag—much quicker than lining up to buy tickets in person.

How to Get to Bangsal Harbor

Bangsal Harbor is the closest and most convenient port if you’re staying in Senggigi, Mataram, or northern areas like Senaru and Sembalun. However, if you’re based in southern Lombok (Kuta) or the southwest (Sekotong), it may be more practical to use Lembar Port, which offers limited options, including overnight ferries to Bali.

Here’s how to get to Bangsal from popular locations in Lombok, with estimated costs for transport:

• From Senggigi: 30 minutes (16 km). Taxis or private drivers charge around 150,000–200,000 IDR for the short and scenic drive.
• From Mataram: 1 hour (30 km). Expect to pay 250,000–300,000 IDR for a private car or taxi. Shared rides are available but can take longer.
• From Kuta Lombok: 2.5 hours (80 km). A private driver costs 600,000–800,000 IDR. Shared shuttle services are cheaper but may add time with multiple stops.
• From Lombok International Airport: 2 hours (65 km). Private airport transfers cost 400,000–600,000 IDR, depending on negotiation.
• From Senaru or Sembalun: 2 hours (60–70 km). Private transfers typically cost 450,000–600,000 IDR, making it the easiest choice for Rinjani trekkers.

Tip: Traffic in and out of Bangsal Harbor can be slow due to the narrow, sandy road leading to the port. We’ve been stuck here for up to 20 minutes, so leave early and book your tickets in advance to avoid unnecessary stress.

What to Expect at Bangsal Port: Departures

If you’re leaving Lombok to head to Bali or the Gili Islands, Bangsal Port can feel a bit chaotic, but with a few tips, you’ll have a smoother experience. The large concrete parking area is often crowded with vans and cars dropping off and picking up travelers. This can cause delays, so we recommend asking your driver to stop about 50 meters before the entrance to the car park to avoid getting stuck in the congestion.

As soon as you arrive, you might encounter touts offering to sell you tickets or carry your bags in exchange for tips. They’re not overly aggressive, but it’s best to politely decline by saying “no thank you” and head directly to the buildings on the right to find your ticket desk. If you booked your ticket online through 12Go or GetYourGuide (links above), you’ll already know which company to look for.

The desks are well-signed, but if you have trouble finding yours, just ask one of the locals working at any counter—they’re usually happy to help.

Once you’ve shown your online ticket or bought one in cash (prices are the same), you’ll receive a bag tag and paper boarding ticket. The staff will direct you to leave your bag in the designated area, and then you’ll wait for your boat to be called. When it’s time to board, you’ll line up at the pier, show your ticket, and walk down to the boat. Some staff might offer to carry your bag; a small tip is fine, but if they’re overly insistent, you can choose to carry it yourself. At the speedboat, the crew will load your bag onto the vessel, and you’ll board to begin your journey.

What to Expect at Bangsal Port: Arrivals

Arriving at Bangsal Port from Bali or the Gili Islands is usually more hectic than departing. The moment you step off the pier, you’ll likely encounter touts trying to grab your bags or offer transport services. While some are friendly, Bangsal has a reputation for overly aggressive touts, which can feel overwhelming. To handle this, we recommend staying calm and firmly saying “Tidak, makasih” (no, thank you) or if you really want to shock them, using the local Sasak phrase “Dende wah, makasi” to politely decline.

After passing through the pier area, head to the main car park, where you’ll find plenty of taxis waiting.

If you didn’t arrange transport in advance, this is the easiest way to continue your journey. Remember to negotiate the fare and agree on a price before getting into the car to avoid overpaying. For reference, taxi costs are typically around 150,000–200,000 IDR to Senggigi, 250,000–300,000 IDR to Mataram, and 600,000–800,000 IDR to Kuta Lombok, with other destinations like the airport or Senaru priced similarly.

Note: While we understand and support locals that need to rely on tourism for their livelihood, we believe the pushy behavior of some touts detracts from the welcoming chill vibe Lombok is known for. A smooth, stress-free arrival can set the tone for your trip, and we would love to see the attitude of the locals at the port change.
