Mawun beach, Kuta Lombok
We’ve slowly watched the south coast of Lombok change over the years. Small vendors and beachside warungs have been pushed aside in some places to make room for big hotel projects and beach clubs. Mawun, though, is different, it’s a truly beautiful Lombok beach that has kept its charm.
We love this beach, and depending on the group, we almost always include it on our epic Lombok Loop trip. It’s one of those spots that still feels local and laid-back, where you can swim, chill, and grab a cheap plate of nasi campur without the crowds.
Whether you’re joining us on the Lombok Loop or you want to visit Mawun Beach independently, here’s a quick local guide to help you plan your visit.
Mawun Beach: Overview
Mawun Beach is one of the easiest day trips from Kuta Lombok, and despite its beauty it’s still far quieter than Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan. Here’s what to know before you go:
- Location: 8 km west of Kuta (20 minutes by motorbike or car). Roads are paved and easy to drive.
- Entrance fee: Rp 10,000 for motorbike parking, paid at the small booth on the access road.
- Parking: Safe and right by the sand; usually Rp 5,000 extra if you park all day.
- Facilities: A handful of local warungs rent umbrellas (Rp 50,000 per day), sell coconuts, and serve cheap Indonesian food like nasi goreng or mie ayam. No big restaurants or hotels on the sand.
- Swimming: Generally calm near the shore, though waves pick up in the middle of the bay.
- Best time to visit: Mornings are usually quiet and not too hot. Around midday, small groups and tours sometimes drop in but overall still very quiet
- Vibe: Laid-back and local. Still more chickens than tourists.

How to Get to Mawun Beach
Mawun Beach is in Tumpak Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok, about 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok.
We visit Mawun Beach on one of our many South Lombok beach stops on our loop around the island. However, if you’re staying in Kuta Lombok and want to visit it yourself, here’s how we’d do it:
By Motorbike
- Distance: 8 km from Kuta, roughly 20 minutes.
- Route: Head west on Jalan Raya Kuta Mandalika. Look for the brown sign “Pantai Mawun” and turn left at the bamboo shack selling petrol in plastic bottles. Continue straight; the road leads directly to the beach.
- Parking: Pay IDR 10,000 per motorbike at the small barrier gate near the sand.
- Rental Costs: Scooters in Kuta start from IDR 65,000 per day; ask about discounts for multiple days.
By Car
- Distance: Same as motorbike, around 8 km / 20 minutes.
- Route: Follow the same directions as for a motorbike. Roads are paved and suitable for all vehicles.
- Parking: Same as motorbike parking; safe and close to the beach.
By Taxi or Ride-Hailing
- Availability: Gojek, Grab, and local taxis operate in Kuta. Return trips may be harder to secure, so plan ahead.
- Cost: Agree on a fare before departure to avoid surprises.

What’s There to do At Mawun Beach?
Mawun Beach is one of our favorite stops on the Lombok Loop, the bay is large and deep, mostly protected, so it’s perfect for swimming. Depending on the wind and swell, you can sometimes get a few waves, especially near the eastern point, which has a small surf break that’s fun for shortboards but rarely crowded.
Along the sand, children often sell handmade bracelets and local ladies run tiny warungs cooking everything from nasi campur to mie goreng.
We usually make a stop here to grab a fresh coconut, stretch our legs, and go for a swim. It’s also one of our favorite spots to fly the drone. From above, the crescent bay and surrounding hills look incredible. The beach still feels laid-back and local, with fishermen pulling in small catches and the occasional bemo dropping off visitors.
Even when a small tour group comes through, it never feels overwhelming, which is why we always try to include Mawun on our trips. It’s a spot that has retained its charm while many other south Lombok beaches have been overtaken by hotels and beach clubs.

Our Lombok Loop Beach Review
As Lombok locals, we’re on a mission to visit and review every beach on the island. Here’s how Mawun Beach stacks up:
Mawun is a crescent-shaped bay about 8 km west of Kuta, tucked between two low headlands. We usually arrive around 8:30 am to beat even the small tour groups. The water near the center of the bay is around waist to chest depth for 20–30 meters out, making it perfect for a relaxed swim or floating. The eastern point has a small surf break that works best with a 1–2 meter swell from the southeast; it’s shallow enough to paddle in without fear and rarely has more than a handful of surfers.
On the sand, you’ll find Ibu Siti’s warung near the parking area serving fresh nasi campur for IDR 25,000 and young kids selling woven bracelets for IDR 5,000 each. Umbrella rentals are IDR 50,000 a day, and parking is right at the beach gate for IDR 10,000 per motorbike.
We like to grab a coconut from Ibu Siti, walk 200 meters along the eastern sand to the rocks, and jump into the deeper bay for a swim. From that spot, it’s also the best angle to fly the drone, the headlands and hills curve perfectly around the bay, giving you a clean aerial of the entire crescent.
Mawun hasn’t been taken over by big luxury resorts like Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan. You’ll still see local fishermen pulling in small nets in the morning and occasional bemos dropping off families from Kuta. Even when a small tour group arrives mid-morning, the bay never feels crowded. For us, it’s one of the last beaches on the south coast that still shows what the area used to be, local, calm, and entirely accessible. If you want a full South Lombok experience, a swim in protected water, and a real taste of local beach life, Mawun belongs on your route.
